Free Rent Receipt Format & Template for HRA

A rent receipt is the written proof your landlord gives each time you pay rent. Salaried employees in India use these receipts to claim the House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act — your employer relies on them to work out how much rent you actually paid, and the receipts are your evidence if the claim is later examined. A valid rent receipt names the tenant and landlord, states the rent period and amount, the property address, the payment mode, and carries the landlord's signature (with a revenue stamp on cash payments above Rs 5,000). Where annual rent exceeds Rs 1,00,000, you must also report the landlord's PAN to your employer. This guide explains the correct format field by field. With KukBook you can fill, print and share a clean rent receipt for free; and for GST-taxable supplies (not residential rent), KukBook also helps you generate GST invoices and file GSTR-1/3B, plus e-invoices and e-way bills.

Frequently asked questions

Is a rent receipt a GST document?

No. Renting a residential dwelling to an individual for personal use is exempt from GST, so a rent receipt is a simple proof-of-payment document, not a GST tax invoice — it carries no GSTIN, HSN/SAC or tax breakup. GST can apply to commercial leases, or to residential lettings where the tenant is GST-registered (tax payable under reverse charge), but a standard HRA rent receipt is non-GST. KukBook handles GST tax invoices, GSTR-1/3B, e-invoices and e-way bills separately from receipts like this.

When do I need a revenue stamp on a rent receipt?

A Re 1 revenue stamp is required when a single rent payment is made in cash and exceeds Rs 5,000. The landlord signs across the stamp to acknowledge receipt. If rent is paid by cheque, UPI or bank transfer, no revenue stamp is needed regardless of the amount.

Do I need the landlord's PAN on the rent receipt?

You don't need the PAN printed on every receipt, but if your total annual rent exceeds Rs 1,00,000 you must report the landlord's PAN to your employer to claim the HRA exemption. If the landlord has no PAN, a signed declaration from the landlord giving their name and address is accepted instead. Keep these details on file alongside your monthly receipts.

Can I claim HRA without rent receipts?

Employers generally require rent receipts to factor the HRA exemption into your salary TDS, and the receipts are your evidence if the claim is ever scrutinised. For annual rent above Rs 1,00,000 the landlord's PAN is also needed. Paying by bank transfer or UPI and keeping monthly signed receipts gives you the strongest, verifiable record.
